The St. John Valley Heritage Trail runs from Market Street, which is
also Route 161, in Fort Kent and follows the St. John River west to
the end of the rail line, at a former railroad switching station in St.
Francis. The trail is used year-round, by snowmobilers during winter
months and hikers, bicyclists, horse riders and all-terrain vehicles
during the summer months. The trail is over 16 miles long, and runs
within close proximity to the St. John River through scenic forest-
covered terrain. At present, the surface is hard-packed gravel, but
future plans call for a crushed stone surface.
