Sakatah is the Dakota word for Singing Hills, a reference to
the area's Indian heritage. The Sakatah Singing Hills Trail is
also a trail of lakes, as it passes by a dozen on the way from
Mankato to Faribault. From Mankato, the trail climbs at an
almost imperceptible rate for the first two miles, going through
a heavily wooded area surrounded by large hills. This is also
the most used and scenic section of the trail. On its way east,
it passes through several quaint little towns with beautiful lakes.
Between Waterville and Morristown, the trail passes through
the Sakatah State Park and runs along the south side of Sakatah
Lake. The park is about three miles long and has a dense tree
canopy through its entire length. Even though the last several
miles of trail into Faribault parallel the highway, there are enough trees to make the trail seem removed from the traffic. The
total
trail length is 39 miles. This is one nice trail in the south central
part of the state.
