In 1990, the first
five-mile section of the Pinellas Trail opened.
Since then, the trail has been extended to 34 miles and
has
about 90,000 visitors each month. The Trail is 15 feet wide,
and has a smooth asphalt surface. The Pinellas Trail is a corridor
linking some of Pinellas County’s most
scenic parks, coastal
areas, and neighborhoods. Along some parts of the
trail, visitors
may think they’re miles from civilization. Sheltered benches,
water fountains, bicycle racks, sheltered tables, litter baskets,
mileage markers, and trail maps are located along the trail. The
Pinellas Trail is featured as the downtown anchor in
Dunedin,
where there
are many quaint shops and restaurants.
Future improvements to the trail include additional
overpasses
and a 20.6 mile extension on a utility corridor.
