The Longleaf Trace Trail is paved, 10 feet wide, and at a length
of 41 miles, is the longest rail-trail in the south central US.
Currently, the trail runs from Prentiss to the
University of Southern Mississippi campus in Hattiesburg. There are
plans to extend the trail to downtown Hattiesburg. A
26 mile horse path parallels the Trace from
Carson to Eply Station. The trail runs
through Piney Woods country, named for the vast forests of pine that
grow between Jackson and the Gulf Coast. Most users report that the Longleaf
Trail is quite scenic, and nicely shaded.
From Interstate 59 go west on U.S.
Highway 98 (Hardy Street) past Turtle Creek Mall about two miles to
Gravel Pit Road. Turn right (north) on Gravel Pit Road at Lake Serene Grocery and Amoco. Gravel Pit Road will wind around and dead-end at
4th Street. Turn left (west) on 4th Street, then take the first right
on Jackson Road. Jackson Station will be on your left in one-quarter
mile.
