In June of 1993, the 400 State
Trail was officially opened. It
was developed on an abandoned
Chicago-Northwestern Railroad
bed that ran between
Chicago and the Twin Cities. The
400 Trail was named for the
Chicago - Northwestern passenger
train that traveled the 400
miles between Chicago and
Minneapolis/St. Paul in 400
minutes.
The 400 State Trail is located
between Reedsburg and Elroy with
5 communities conveniently
spaced. The spur
from Union Center runs
southwesterly for 4 miles to
Hillsboro.
The Trail Headquarters is
located in the historic depot in
Reedsburg.
The Baraboo River runs the
entire length of the Trail, and
the trail crosses the
Baraboo River eleven times in the 22
miles from
Elroy to
.
There is also a 7 mile horse
trail between Wonewoc and La
Valle which parallels the main
trail.
The trail runs past wetlands,
sandstone bluffs, farmland and
pastures.
The 400 State Trail is part of a
100+ mile linking trail system.
