The American River Parkway Trail extends more than 30 miles
from Old Sacramento to Folsom Dam. There are only a few
street crossings. In the future, the remaining street crossings will
be eliminated. The Trail, the American River, several parks,
beaches and recreational areas make up the American River
Parkway, a greenbelt area which runs from the Sacramento
River to Nimbus Dam. From the dam to Folsom Reservoir,
there are additional parkway lands through which the trail runs.
And so, being a multi-use area, there are places for picnicking,
fishing and swimming. The River is also popular for rafting,
kayaking, and canoeing. The Parkway receives more use than
any other recreational area in the Sacramento region. More than
five million visitors use the Parkway each year.
